If you’re looking for something to stream, I strongly recommend “By Design: The Joe Caroff Story,” a 52-minute documentary which is streaming now on Max. I liked it so much I added it to my Movies You Might Not Know list.

The legendary graphic designer created logos and artwork for some of the most iconic posters, ads, and promotional items of the last seventy years — including the famous James Bond 007 handgun image:

Caroff, who was 100 years old when the documentary was made in 2022, explains on camera how he came up with the visuals, complemented by some of the people he worked with, including Mike Medavoy, the legendary producer, co-founder of Orion Pictures, and studio head.

Here are just a few of the more than 300 movie posters Caroff created. Today, much of this work is done by artists using computers, but Caroff did everything by hand, including creating an entirely new font for the “Last Tango In Paris” poster.
