On the latest episode of his “WTF” podcast, Marc Maron announced that the show will come to an end this fall:
It really comes down to the fact that we’ve put up a new show every Monday and Thursday for almost sixteen years and we’re tired. We’re burnt out. And we are utterly satisfied with the work we’ve done. We’ve done great work. This doesn’t mean I’m never going to do something like this again. Doesn’t mean I’ll never have talks like I do here, or some kind of podcast at some point in time. But for now, we’re just wrapping things up. It’s okay. It’s okay to end things. It’s okay to try to start some other chapter in your life.
I can fully relate, having made a similar decision to end my radio career in 2018. I haven’t regretted it one day since.
Still, I’ll miss Maron’s podcast. It has been a must-listen because of Maron’s curiosity and willingness to let the conversation flow wherever it goes, with no need to stick to a rigid list of questions of topics. His producer, Brendan McDonald, deserves major kudos, too, for ensuring that the final product is stitched together properly, as well as booking interesting guests for so many years. At the beginning, that meant Maron’s comedian friends. But once the show became popular and successful, McDonald was able to widen the scope of invitees, including a famous episode with Barack Obama.
It’s not like Maron is retiring from show business. He has a new HBO special coming this summer and several acting gigs in movies and TV series coming, all of which I look forward to seeing.
