I have long considered Tina Turner singing “River Deep, Mountain High” one of the greatest performances in rock and roll history. With the news of her death at 83, I remember watching her sing it in 1989 during the jam session Paul Shaffer and his band led at the end of the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame induction ceremony.

Here, Tina — who was not inducted until two years later (with Ike) and then again in 2021 as a solo artist — casually steps up to the microphone and, without her backup dancers/singers, belts it out like no one else ever could.
