Here’s some beautiful footage of Mt. Etna erupting last night. I’m sure glad this didn’t happen when I climbed part of the volcano earlier this year (I wrote about that adventure here).

In addition to the lava fountain flowing down the south side, the smoke and ash being spewed were heavy enough to cause the city of Catania to close its airport to all incoming and outgoing flights. It’s not unusual for pieces of lava to land on rooftops there, some thirty miles away…
