Movie Review: “American Utopia”
I can’t think of anyone else who has appeared in two truly great concert movies — but David Byrne has, thanks to “American Utopia,” a filmed version of his hit Broadway show, now streaming on HBO Max. Here’s my review.
POTD: Jerry Jeff Walker
Singer/songwriter Jerry Jeff Walker died Friday at 78, so the Picture Of The Day is a clip of him singing his most famous tune, which became a hit for both the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and Sammy Davis Jr.
POTD: William Tell Overture
If this Picture Of The Day bit of fun from the San Francisco Symphony doesn’t put a smile on your face, have someone check to see if you still have a pulse.
POTD: Annie Ross, “Twisted”
I always thought Joni Mitchell had written this song for her “Court and Spark” album, until I read an obit today about Annie Ross, who not only wrote it, but recorded it 2 decades before Joni. Here she is performing it on a Hugh Hefner TV show.
POTD: “Feelin’ Alright”
For the Picture Of The Day, here are Dave Mason and fellow classic rockers (known collectively as the Quarantines) with an updated-from-home version of his 1968 hit, “Feelin’ Alright.”
What I’m Watching
Here are reviews of five things I’ve watched lately, including a stage bio of Ann Richards, a new standup special from Greg Warren, a documentary about The Band, a Lily Tomlin/Julia Garner drama, and a movie about a voyeur with Asperger syndrome.
POTD: The Chicks
After dropping “Dixie” from their band name, The Chicks have released a video for one of their new songs, “March March,” which includes clips of protestors throughout US history, right up to #BlackLivesMatter.
Hagar The Horrible
Sammy Hagar was one of 14 performers asked by Rolling Stone how they’re dealing with not being able to do concerts during the pandemic. His answer was ridiculous.
