Peter Marshall has died at age 98. You may remember him as the original host of “Hollywood Squares” from 1966 to 1980 (winning four daytime Emmys along the way), but he also did a few movies and Broadway shows.
He was a good storyteller, as well, which he proved when he stopped by my studio on September 13, 2002, while promoting his autobiography, “Backstage With The Original Hollywood Square.”
Two pieces of “Hollywood Squares” trivia:
- OJ Simpson was the only person to do the show both as a contestant (after winning the Heisman Trophy at USC) and later as a celebrity in one of the squares.
- When “Hollywood Squares” was cancelled by NBC in 1980, it was to make room for David Letterman’s short-lived daytime show.
