In posting yesterday’s Picture Of The Day — an SCTV parody of a famous scene from “Taxi Driver” as done by Bob Hope, Woody Allen, and others — I mentioned that Dave Thomas and Rick Moranis did the best-ever impressions of those two comedy legends.
Here’s more proof, an SCTV sketch (also from 1980) called “Play It Again, Bob,” based on Allen’s claim that everything he did in his early movies was stolen directly from Hope. The premise was so clever, the tone of the writing so perfect, and the execution so flawless that I consider it the best thing SCTV ever did. The rest of the cast and creative team must have agreed, as they devoted two segments of the show to it, separated by a commercial, and running a total of 12 minutes.
